Pizza with black garlic cream sauce, roasted broccolini, spicy Italian sausage, cremini mushrooms, shaved red onion, and lemon chili oil.
Green veggies have become some of my favorite toppings for pizza. Broccoli or broccolini, in this case, is one that I use the most. It adds a sweet, bright flavor to the pizza and pairs with a multitude of toppings.

What could be better than garlic on pizza? I know, black garlic! I whipped up a quick and easy black garlic cream sauce for this pizza. The cream’s garlic flavor and balsamic-y sweetness is the perfect accent to the broccolini.

With the sauce base and the main topping finished, everything else just fell into place. I added mushrooms for earthiness, Italian sausage for heat, onions for color and freshness, and lemon chili oil for brightness and a little extra spice. Altogether a rich and flavorful pizza.

Sorry, there is no pizza dough recipe included with this post, as I have yet to develop my own version. Of course, store-bought doughs can be used. If you are looking to make it from scratch, I really like this recipe from the King Arthur Flour website. It is easy to put together and has lots of flavor from the overnight fermentation. The only somewhat negative thing I would say is the dough is wet and can be a challenge to shape.
Roasted Broccolini Pizza
Ingredients
Chili Oil
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/2 tsp chili flake
- 1/2 tsp lemon zest
Roasted Broccolini
- 2 bunches broccolini
- 2 tbsp chili oil
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp pepper
Black Garlic Cream
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 4 cloves black garlic
- 1 pinch salt and pepper each
Mushrooms
- 2 cups cremini mushrooms quartered
- 1 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 pinch salt and pepper each
Pizza
- 3 pizza dough balls homemade or store bought
- 1/2 pound Italian sausage cooked
- 1/4 each red onion shaved
- 3 cups mozzarella shredded or diced
Instructions
Chili Oil
- Put olive oil in a microwave safe container and zap for 30 seconds. Add chili flake and zest to the oil, stir and let sit for 15 minutes. Set aside until ready to use.
Roasted Broccolini
- Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Trim the ends and slice the broccolini into 2-3 inch pieces. Place on a lined baking sheet. Toss with chili oil, salt and pepper. Roast for 10 minutes or until lightly charred and tender. Set aside to cool.
Mushrooms
- In a small pot heat the butter and oil over medium heat. Add the mushrooms and salt and pepper. Cook until tender. Set aside to cool.
Black Garlic Cream
- Smash garlic cloves into a paste. Add the paste to a small pot and whisk in the cream. Reduce the cream by 1/2 over medium low- low heat. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside to cool.
Pizza
- Preheat the oven to 500 degrees. Have your pizza stone or steel in oven. Cut 3 pieces of parchment paper and place one on the back side of a baking pan or pizza peel. On a floured surface, form the dough into a 10-12 inch round and place on the parchment paper. Reshape if necessary.
- Drizzle 3 tablespoons of cream on the dough and spread out with the back of a spoon. Cover the cream with 3/4 cup of cheese. Scatter broccolini, mushrooms, sausage, and onions over the cheese. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of cheese over the toppings. Remove the stone or steel from the oven. Slide the pizza with the parchment onto the stone and place back into the oven. Cook for 8 minutes or until browned. Remove from the oven with parchment paper. Cut into 8 pieces. Drizzle the chili oil over the entire pizza and serve. Repeat the process to make the other two pizzas. Give the stone 5-10 minutes to reheat before cooking the next pizza.
